What amenities for young professionals motivate you to continue to grow your personal and professional life in the Greater Philadelphia region?
When I was looking for graduate schools to pursue a Master in public health, something drew me to the city of Philadelphia. It took me four years to understand this gravitation I felt to the region. The food and culture, recreation, its growing “meds,” “eds” and business scene, in tandem with the robust volunteer opportunities provide endless ways to explore the city and stumble upon something new.
The Greater Philadelphia region provides a balance of professional development, civic engagement, and social connections—everything that motivates my personal and professional growth. Working for one of the anchor institutions in the region, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), has provided me with countless opportunities to give back to this community, which has given and invested so much in my development. Whether it’s through group volunteer days like MLK Day of Service, participating in the annual LOVE Your Park Week activities, encouraging me to join the Chamber’s Young Professionals Council or the Boards of the Spruce Foundation and my local park, Malcolm X Memorial Park, CHOP has been the conduit to much of my social network. Although I am not a native of Philadelphia, all of my efforts through the aforementioned opportunities and programs have not only fostered my altruistic beliefs, but also my ultimate want of making this city home.
The region has so much history and culture—the murals, parks, dining, growing recreational activities like yoga on the banks, at the Horticultural Center, or at Dilworth Park. I appreciate how the region is growing its offerings to be the region of choice for young professionals. The purposeful engagement doesn’t go unnoticed. The Greater Philadelphia region is small enough to know the “ins and outs,” while still feeling like there are so many places to go, people to see, and things to do; as rich as the city’s history is, it never gets old.
