Why is it important that employers define and support career pathways for young professionals and how does this help them retain talent?
The most important thing a company can do is put their people first. This was the first thing my professor, Adam Grant, told me on the first day of his Organizational Development class. Since that moment this is what I live by professionally. Putting employees first, by showing them they have an opportunity to grow, is something that can be done so easily and can have such a huge impact.
We are all human beings, and as human beings we have needs. A few of these needs include:
- A sense of purpose
- A desire to make a meaningful impact
- A desire to learn new things
- Feedback and coaching
- Growth opportunities
A career path program will meet most, if not all of, these needs. A key thing to note is it is not only “young professionals” that want development opportunities, it’s all professionals. You will very rarely hear someone say, “I don’t want to do anything in my career. I like where I am and have no desire to do anything differently.” Companies need to know that a simple, yet impactful, program like a career development program, will help them save money, make money, decrease turnover, but most importantly make an impact on the lives of their employees. So, if a career path program can make such an impact on employees and make them happier, then why not build a career path program?
