YPN kicked off its 2011-2012 program year at McFadden’s at the Ballpark with Scott Palmer, Director of Public Affairs for the Philadelphia Phillies. Kudos to Scott for taking a tiny break from a busy Phillies season to speak with us!
Being in the marketing and public relations sphere myself, I was most interested in Scott’s take of how social media has progressed and how he now uses it to keep fans up-to-date. Social media, for the most part, has enhanced fan communications and has given fans the ability to respond immediately to what’s happening with the team. That also means that when fans do not agree with something going on, they are quick to point it out.
One difficult part of the job, Scott explained, is keeping up with fan emails since he does take the time to read each one and respond appropriately. He stated that if fans take the time to write, he’ll write back. Just make sure you keep the message appropriate and not littered with expletives. I think we owe Scott that much!
Most of us have grown up with Scott Palmer in our lives, whether with the Phillies or on Action News. For me, what I admire most about Scott is his ability to adapt and stay relevant by being able to connect with fans of all ages.
YPN looks forward to seeing you at the next networking event on October 4th at the Philadelphia Center for Architecture!
