Rachel Richards

Contract Administrator/Risk Manager
Pennsylvania Convention Center

What influenced your career path?

My initial interest in law began during a class field trip to Temple Law School for a mock trial while in junior high school. I was intrigued by the attorney’s arguments and their ability to prepare and defend their case. I knew then a career in the legal profession is what I wanted to do.

Tell me about your role at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

In my role as Contract Administrator/Risk Manager, I am responsible for managing the contracting process. As Risk Manager, I advise on any potential risks, identify and assess threats, and assist in the planning and implementation of corrective actions on how to avoid, reduce, and prohibit future risk. I also manage all insurance claims and related ligations.

Tell me about any challenges you have faced in your career and how you overcame them.

I really don’t focus on the challenges. I find it more effective to direct my attention on finding possible solutions and reflecting on what I can learn from every situation.

What do you enjoy most about your profession?

Serving others! In my profession, everything I do is to help and protect the best interest of the Convention Center as well as the safety of our customers and staff.

Why do you believe it is essential to be a part of a professional network such as YPN?

YPN is an essential network to be a part of because it provides an opportunity for young professionals to expand their contacts beyond everyday business partners and co-workers. YPN creates an avenue for young professionals to volunteer their time and take part in education enhancing opportunities to stay relevant in today’s corporate society.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy traveling, singing, hosting and preparing dinner for my family and friends and curling up on the couch with a good book or movie.

What are your top three favorite things to do in Philly?

A walk along Kelly Drive when the weather is nice, trying new restaurants and spa days with my girls.

What advice do you have for other young professionals in the city?

Challenges are not meant to defeat you; they are just obstacles strategically positioned to strengthen your weaknesses and push you to your greatest you. My mother always empowers and encourages me with this quote:

“Once a task has begun never leave it until it’s done. Whether the task be great or small do it well or not at all.” Pursue your dreams and complete your goals!
